Girasole arrives in Nova Scotia

In Vino Veritas ( is thrilled to announce the launch of another new wine to the Nova Scotia market. Girasole Pinot Noir is a certified organic wine from the Redwood Valley of Mendocino in Northern California. Now I could tell you that you should try this wine because of its countless accolades (it did after all recently receive 89 points on the Pinot File, won a Silver Medal at the California State Fair and was a double-gold winner at the Florida State Fair). But I'm going to give you 3 other reasons to add this to your cart in your next trip to the wine store; its Organic, Charlie Barra is a California icon in the Organic movement, and Pinot Noir is a ridiculously versatile wine that will go with almost anything that you are serving.

Why Organic?

Organic wine is made from grapes grown in accordance with principles of organic farming, which typically excludes the use of artificial chemical fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides. It normally also means that no sulfur dioxide is added, although sulfites are a naturally occurring bi-product of wine making. The decision to eat organic is a personal one and, while most agree that organic wines not causing hangovers is a myth, there is data to support that people with sensitivities to sulfur would be best served seeking "organic" when it comes to their choice of wine.

Charlie Barra

Born in 1926 to Italian immigrants, Charlie was destined for the vineyard- working in his father's vineyard at the age of 10 and leasing his first ranch while he was in Junior High. In 1955 Charlie purchased Redwood Valley Vineyards and, after a few short years of growing “vin ordinaire”, Charlie could see the tide was turning. He began working with Karl Wente, Robert Mondavi and others on moving to a varietal-focused vineyard. Charlie was one of the first growers on the North Coast to plant Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir. And over the next 35 years, Charlie would add another six varietals to the soils of Redwood Valley Vineyards including Petite Sirah, Sangiovese, Merlot, Pinot Blanc, Muscat Canelli and Zinfandel. Charlie likes to say that he’s “been farming organically for 50 years; the first 30 I didn’t know it". The vineyards have been certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers for the past 20 years.

Pinot Noir

Simply, it goes with everything! It has enough finesse to pair with salmon and salad, has the acidity to match fattier dishes and cheeses and is at home with chicken and pasta. Rumour has it, it also goes well at the beach, on the patio and always with friends too!

The Girasole Pinot Noir profiles bright red currant fruit, medium body and soft tannins with complex notes of cola, leather and tea. It can be found Harvest Wines and Spirits in Dartmouth, West Side Beer|Wine|Spirits in Clayton Park, and Rockhead Wine & Beer Market in the North end of Halifax.
